Júlia

Kozáková

Júlia Kozáková is one of the leading voices on the European world music scene. Her work is rooted in a sensitive fusion of contemporary music, jazz and musical traditions, with a strong focus on an authentic, deeply personal artistic expression.

She studied ethnomusicology at SOAS University of London, flamenco in Seville, and jazz at the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Contemporary Music Performance at Berklee College of Music in Valencia. Her musical foundations were formed in Slovak folk ensembles and later in the Roma choir Čhavorenge led by Ida Kelarová.

Her albums Manuša (2022) and Manuša II (2025) both received the Radio_Head Award, with the latter becoming the first Slovak album in history to reach No. 1 on the World Music Charts Europe. Since her debut release, Júlia has achieved significant international recognition and has performed in more than 15 countries, including a concert at Lincoln Center in New York.

Alongside her own project, she collaborates with ensembles such as SOLE and O Gadže Bašaven, gradually moving towards original composition, where she blends diverse cultural and musical influences into her own organically evolving musical language.

“Kozáková’s deep respect for the music and culture of the Slovak Roma permeates these recordings... Manuša is highly recommended“ (Songlines)
